Crabgrass is best adapted to well-drained sandy soils, but can also be productive on sandy loam soils. Crabgrass is usually planted in mid to late spring on a clean tilled seedbed. It can be productive when planted into the summer months if adequate moisture is available. Since it has the ability to produce many seeds, it is usually planted only one time with yearly production occurring from reseeding, volunteer stands. Crabgrass can be managed as a reseeding annual. The typical management practice for this approach is to remove cattle about one month before the first killing frost. This practice will allow seed set to occur. The following spring, the soil can be lightly disked or harrowed to improve seed contact with the soil.
